Reports of Southwestern Utah’s Saddle fire spreading and the possibility of mandatory evacuations of Pine Valley and beyond sparked more that just new hotspots on Friday. Hurricane-based animal welfare and rescue organization Because Animals Matter is responding to potential needs not always addressed in times of such natural disasters. Because Animals Matter offers its resources as a network of foster homes to act as tentative shelter for as many companion pets and livestock as possible who are displaced by the fire.
Because Animals Matter has opened communication with the Red Cross to offer a variety of services to people potentially displaced by the fire, but more volunteers are needed.
“When disasters like fires and floods occur, communities are always the most successful in recovery when they work together,” said September Smith, president of Because Animals Matter. “We simply want to help our greater region make it through this or any major disaster so when all is said and done the comfort in knowing companion animals are safe can further aid in recovery.”
Anticipated needs for this or future disasters include supplies like crates and kennels, bedding, pet food, dishes, dog runs, physical aid in transporting animals ranging from small pocket pets to livestock, assistance with caring for the animals, and foster homes and yards for pets and livestock of all types.
“If no animals are in need at this time, we can use this emergency as the foundation for BAM’s new Emergency Response Team to ensure our fastest possible assistance down the road,” said J. Schilling, founder and vice president of the organization. “While we understand that most of the homes at risk with the Saddle Fire are not primary residences, we want to help in any way we can to support pet owners.”
