On Saturday, Sept. 19, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab will host the Strut Your Mutt fundraising festival from noon until 3 p.m.

Strut Your Mutt is a 12-city fundraising dog walk, 5K run, and festival that brings together rescue groups, shelters, and individuals to celebrate the collective effort of saving the lives of shelter pets in cities across the nation. However, the Kanab event will not feature a 5K run. The national fundraising goal for 2015 is $2.6 million, and the local goal for the Kanab event is $75,000.

Six area animal rescue groups will participate in Strut Your Mutt: Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry, Greyhound Gang, Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas, Iron County Animal Shelter, Page Animal Adoption Agency, and Providing Animals With Support (PAWS).

Additionally, through a virtual Strut Your Mutt Challenge, supporters can raise money to help homeless pets in their own communities or for national programs that help to create sweeping changes for homeless pets everywhere.

Best Friends Animal Society, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in our nation’s shelters, has raised more than $5.2 million since 2010 for its animal welfare partners through this event. A leader in the no-kill movement, Best Friends runs the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals as well as lifesaving programs in partnership with rescue groups and shelters across the country. Since its founding in 1984, Best Friends has helped reduce the number of animals killed in American shelters from 17 million per year to an estimated 4 million.

Online registration for Strut Your Mutt will remain open until Friday, Sept. 18 at noon; however, onsite registration and check-in begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located at 5001 Angel Canyon Rd. in Kanab.
