The Cedar City Arts Council will honor James Case at its spring networking social in the Heritage Center Theater’s upper level conference room on Monday, June 6, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The spring program features live music by The Cedar City Jazz Dektette, dance performances by Southern Utah University dance students with choreography by Helen Tamiris, and food by The French Spot. The council will recognize Case for his contribution to art in the community followed by presentations from artists and recent grant recipients Valerie Orlemann and Jay Merryweather.
“The Dektette will open the event, while attendees enjoy tasty treats and the artwork display of plein air painter Valerie Orlemann,” said Denise Purvis, council board member and spring social organizer.
On behalf of the council, board member Mary Anne Andersen will present an award to Case, who is a singer, photographer, art collector, and art supporter, acknowledging and thanking him for his contributions to art in Cedar City.
“The evening will include a short performance of classic work by modern dance choreographer and social activist Helen Tamiris and stellar dancing by recent SUU graduate Kristen Stringham and senior dance students Allie Mathis and Mekinzey Parks,” said Purvis.
Merryweather, professor of graphic design at SUU and recent grant recipient, will showcase his STEAM engine project, an interactive and mobile art learning lab he is building for educational outreach at North Elementary.
“Bring your friends and family, and come learn more about the Cedar City Arts Council and the myriad of ways they serve the Iron County community,” said Purvis.
The Heritage Center Theater is located at 105 N. 100 E. in Cedar City. Entrance from the second level of the parking terrace provides direct access to the upper level conference room.
