Dixie State University’s weekly “Dixie Forum: A Window on the World” series will continue on Tuesday, Oct. 20, with a presentation by author and professor Dr. Fernando Rubio. Dr. Rubio will share his lecture “Learning Languages in the Age of Connectedness,” which explores his experience and research about technology-enhanced language teaching. The presentation will take place from noon until 12:50 p.m. in the Dunford Auditorium in the Browning Resource Center on the DSU campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Drawing from his experience of both teaching the Spanish language and researching second language acquisition and assessment, Dr. Rubio will discuss the benefits and challenges of incorporating technology into second language learning.

In 2014, the Utah Foreign Language Association named Dr. Rubio the Utah Foreign Language Teacher of the Year. He is also the 2015 Teacher of the Year from the South West Conference on Language Teaching and a finalist for National Teacher of the Year. He is the author of two textbooks and has written numerous articles and book chapters on issues related to second language acquisition, assessment, and technology-enhanced language teaching.

Dr. Rubio received a doctorate in Spanish linguistics from State University of New York at Buffalo. He currently teaches Spanish linguistics at the University of Utah where he is also co-director of the Second Language Teaching and Research Center.

Dixie Forum is a weekly lecture series designed to introduce the St. George community and DSU students, faculty, and staff to diverse ideas and personalities while widening their worldviews via a 50-minute presentation. Next week, Dixie Forum will continue at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in the Dunford Auditorium when poet Lauren K. Alleyne will read her poetry and host a Q-and-A session.
