Dogtown Half has events for all ages, abilities
By David Cordero
The Dogtown races in Washington City serve a variety of athletes, from those who yearn for a full marathon to children who have never competed in a race and all those in between.
The Dogtown Half Marathon, Double Dog Dare, 5K and the Grandpa Ralph’s Fun Run (for kids 12 years and younger), all set for Feb. 24, give runners of all levels an opportunity to get outside, take a breath of fresh air and get their hearts pumping. It’s an event for everyone.
“The great thing about the Dogtown Half is that people often use it as part of conquering their New Year’s resolution,” said Marcia Whitney, events/rentals coordinator for the Washington City Community Center. “They have had it circled on their calendar since the beginning of the year.”
Organizers are expecting approximately 800 runners for this year’s half-marathon, including an estimated 20 to 30 percent from outside the area. They will be supported by more than 100 volunteers on race day.
Most of the half-marathon course is on asphalt and paved trails, with one short area of dirt and gravel. All participants are required to park near the finish line at Staheli Farm and take a shuttle bus to the start line in Hurricane. The race is set for 8 a.m.
In addition to the half marathon, runners may take on the “Double-Dog Dare” and turn their half marathon into a full marathon (the start time is between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.). There is also the 5K race and the Kids Run for those seeking a quicker conclusion.
“The scenery of the race is truly unique, with our beautiful boardwalk along the trail,” Whitney added. “The finish line at Staheli Family Farm is great for spectators and race participants.”
