Have you ever wondered how the original settlers to Utah really settled the area? Machinery was vital to development. Come learn about it at the first Iron County Historical Society meeting of 2015. The Iron County Historical Society will hold its first meeting of the New Year Wednesday January 14th at 7:00 pm at the Frontier Homestead State Park/Museum, 635 N. Main, Cedar City, Utah.

Dr. Richard Saunders will talk about the first industrial machinery brought to Utah in 1849 and its importance to the development of the state. The small, hand-operated Ramage printing press was the first in a long line of similar machines that helped make settlement, politics, economics, and entertainment possible for early settlers. Dr. Saunders will talk about both the press and printed material, and how it fit into settlements up and down the Utah corridor.  Dr. Saunders is Dean of Libraries at SUU and wrote Printing in Deseret, published by the University of Utah Press in 2000.

All are welcome to attend this event at no cost. For additional information on the evening’s program, contact Paula Mitchell, 586-7976, [email protected]
