The Dixie State University Honoree Selection Committee is accepting nominations for two community awards that will be presented to deserving recipients during the institution’s 105th Commencement Exercises on May 6, 2016.

To honor the community members who tirelessly work to support DSU and help it reach its mission to provide students with rigorous learning opportunities and engage the entire southern Utah region, DSU awards honorary doctorates and Distinguished Citizen/Alumni Awards each year. Nominations are being accepted through Saturday, Nov. 14.

“So many have attended, participated, or given to DSU in the past and as a university, we would like to honor those individuals, but need help to identify them,” said Chris Durham, chairwoman of the DSU Honoree Selection Committee and Board of Trustees. “We would also like to encourage those who have the time and interest to begin a relationship through service or giving monetarily to DSU.”

The honorary doctorate is awarded to individuals who have achieved distinction in their professional fields and participated in the development of DSU. Recipients of this honor are distinct individuals who are committed to bringing honor to themselves and the university through commitment to public service.

Over the last five years, honorary doctorates have been awarded to Lt. Gov. Spencer J. Cox, Dr. Max H. Rose, Reverend Carolyn Tanner Irish, Cheri B. Atkin, Dr. F. Ann Millner, Dr. Gregory A. Prince, LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson, and Monte Holm.

The Distinguished Citizen/Alumni Award is presented to a southern Utah resident or Dixie alumnus or alumna who has given distinguished service to the nation, the university, the community, or his or her profession over the course of at least five years.

Past recipients of the Distinguished Citizen/Alumni Award include Pastor Jimi Kestin, Stanley J. Plewe, Gail Bunker, Frank Habibian, Terri Kane, John E. Anderson, Dixie Heaton Andrus, Gloria M. Prahl, Elvin M. “Andy” Anderson, Valerie Johnson, Brad Rich, Gloria Shakespeare, Dorothy Orton, Kirk E. Smith, Marcia Wade, and Meghan White.
