Hurricane senior Heather Noel Stout awarded Samsung American Legion Scholarship
Heather Noel Stout from Hurricane is one of ten scholars selected from over 5,700 applicants across the nation for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship. Each Samsung American Legion National Scholar receives a $10,000 scholarship for undergraduate expenses and the opportunity to be honored for their accomplishments in Washington, D.C.
Administered by The American Legion since 1996, this scholarship fund is endowed by Samsung in appreciation of U.S. veterans with emphasis on the families of those who served during the Korean War. National Scholars must be direct descendants of war-time veterans. Stout’s grandfather is a veteran of the Korean War.
To become a Samsung American Legion National Scholar, applicants must first be selected as state finalists from their respective American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program. From the 99 state finalists, the top ten applicants are selected by The American Legion Committee on Youth Education. These students distinguish themselves through their academic accomplishments and dedication to service in their communities.
While in Washington, D.C., Stout visited the White House for a private tour and attended the D-Day Observance Ceremony at the World War II Memorial.
With the help of this scholarship, Stout plans to attend Utah State University in the fall to pursue a degree in horticulture.
