Interstate 15 construction begins over Virgin RiverThe Utah Department of Transportation has begun widening Interstate 15 between exits 4 and 5. The project will construct one auxiliary lane in each direction between the interchanges at Brigham Road and Dixie Drive. The lanes are designed to allow drivers to enter the freeway and exit at the next interchange without merging with through traffic or changing lanes.

To complete the widening, the existing bridges over the Virgin River will be replaced. The new bridges will be wide enough to accommodate an additional future travel lane on I-15 in each direction.

To ensure the safety of the general public and the construction workers, the Virgin River Trail under I-15 will be closed several times throughout the duration of the project during critical bridge demolition and new bridge erection activities. During the closure periods, trail users will be detoured to alternate routes. The first closure is expected to begin Jan. 23.

All lanes are expected to remain open on I-15 during the day between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. to minimize delays. Drivers should expect occasional overnight lane restrictions. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2017. Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

More information about the project is available at udot.utah.gov/exit4-5 or by calling (435) 879-3435 or emailing exit4_5@utah.gov.
