J. Raymond Mireles is creating photographic portraits of Americans in all 50 states and will photograph St. George residents during his visit to the area on June 12. Entitled “Neighbors,” the project aims to create a unique and compelling visual document that brings together Americans of all backgrounds and from every corner of the country.

During his St. George visit, Mireles will create portraits using his signature style in select locations in and around the city. He seeks individuals who represent the spirit of the community, be it through the industry in which they’re employed, the location in which they live or work, or the community groups with which they’re affiliated.

Once the project is completed, the final images will be compiled into a book, “Neighbors,” and large-scale prints will be publicly exhibited within the original communities where the images were taken and the portrait subjects reside. Samples of the “Neighbors” project may be viewed at jraymondmireles.com. A short documentary on his initial exhibition in San Diego can be viewed here. A recent interview with Mireles can be found here.

Mireles has been photographing and documenting the American experience for 25 years. Beginning as a commercial photographer in the 1990s, his roster of advertising clients has included Fortune 500 companies like DuPont, Intuit and Pfizer. Mireles has pursued documentary projects about the gold rush style oil boom in North Dakota, life in the contemporary art hub of Berlin, economic disparity in the California desert, and the people and places that make up the central New Mexico of his ancestors. From being held hostage by ruthless oil men to photographing the wealthy and beautiful for magazine covers, Mireles has no shortage of stories to share.
