LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Rebuttal to opinion piece; Councilman Almquist was wrongly accused

Submitted by: Britt Adams

I recently picked up an Independent issue and was pleasantly surprised to read Dr. Ralph Rohr’s clever and interesting article on elitism. I was fortunate to have worked with Dr. Rohr at a medical institution in Salt Lake City years ago. Besides his role as a most excellent pathologist he was also a distinctive intellectual. I wished that he would tell me why the average hard-working American believes that he/she belongs to the 5% top elite and votes in their favor when that vote only benefits the fat cats?
I also read Dallas Hyland’s baffling opinion about Gil Almquist. I am not a member of the LDS church but I know Gil well and live in the same neighborhood and must come to his defense. In the last 10 years since I moved here, I have seen how he worked endless hours for the best of this community. He is the person who first was at the wheel to make the city what it is today; to accuse him of wrongdoing is a great injustice; e.g. he put in a sidewalk needed in the city and paid for it out of his own pocket; he is extremely willing and helpful to our citizens, yet you and Ed Baca are accusing him of wrongdoings, breaking the law!

The ridiculous claim that Gil is keeping an excessive amount of plants on his property is ludicrous; you better come up with something more than that. Ed Baca’s satirical, inappropriate suggestion that Gil has been given “gifts” and talents, but no double standard will be given is a direct insult to Gil and defamation of character. Why would a person on a council conduct himself that way? Envy? We will remember what you said Ed at the voting booth.

Articles of this sort unfortunately are grasped up by the general public who always favors the negatives. Unfortunately, no one remembers the accuser but always the accused and you have wrongly accused one of St. George’s finest and most honorable citizens I believe that you owe him an apology.

I am not a member of the big M and there are times when I O.D. on the pioneer stuff but I cannot keep quiet when an injustice has been done. Perhaps it was the big M that made your dam bust.
