The pioneers of modern art broke through the boundaries established by art academies by introducing new techniques and methods of representation. Eye makeup artists like Marie Dausell, an artist based out of Copenhagen, are innovating the genre techniques similar to those introduced by the groundbreaking artists of the modern art movement.

Names like Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock are all household names in modern art. They were pioneers of the art world, moving away from tradition and expanding their horizons in such a way that would change art forever. They used bright, bold colors and clean lines, and their impressionist, cubist, and abstract art can be found in galleries around the world. Modern art has inspired fashion, interior design, and architecture, so it was only natural that the makeup world would also be influenced.

The eye makeup of Marie Dausell embodies modern art, one eye at a time. Her lines are incredibly clean and have a certain simplicity, although it’s clear her looks are actually quite complex to execute. Artistic eye makeup has become rather popular. From intense liner work to full-blown art scenes that somehow fit on a single eyelid, artists worldwide have been experimenting with everything they can do with eyeshadow, liner, gloss, and lashes. The results are stunning and calculated.

Dausell’s work is so remarkably precise that it’s difficult to overlook. I was first introduced to her work through a shoutout on Instagram and was instantly enthralled by the creativity and cutting-edge perfection.

Even when she uses only one product (yes, just one) for a series of looks, she is able to display incredible contrast and full range of artistry. Her four looks created using Kat Von D liner in Neruda are all so different, while maintaining a running theme.

The other morning, I spent time doing a full eye-shadow look, only to ruin the right eye with basic winged liner. It was so bad that I had to redo the entire eye, so you can see why I stand in such awe of Marie’s stunning work.

By paying attention to the very small details, Dausell is able to create immaculate, graphic eye looks with everyday eye makeup products. To view more of her work, follow her on Instagram at @dausell.
