An open letter to Mitch McConnellAn open letter to Mitch McConnell

By Paul Wennberg

“I’m going to let the people of Alabama make the call.”

This does not wash your hands, or those of the Republican Party, of this, Mitch McConnell. I am disgusted that the leader of the most powerful legislative body on this planet is supporting an accused child molester. You are right in that you will let the people of Alabama make their own decision on whether or not they are going to support a child predator and vote him into a body of government that was once regarded as a bastion of liberty and a defender of justice; you sir, however, have made your call. Senator McConnell and the Republican Party are supporting a child predator’s campaign for the Alabama Senate seat vacated by Mr. “I do not recall.” This is disgraceful.

In a matter of days the Republican Party has sold out the middle and lower classes to Republican donors to benefit legislators’ pocketbooks and stood up to defend the assailant, not the survivors of sexual assault. In a matter of days, the Republican Party has not only fiscally scared the nation and thrown our health care system, real estate market, and industry into uncertainty as we grapple with the repercussions of a tax bill that extends its tentacles into every facet of our society but also financially supported a child predator. In a matter of days, the Republican Party has silenced the voice of the majority of the people of the United States and silenced the voice of children who have survived this predator, who the Republican Party dreams of putting into office.

Mitch McConnell claims that “harassment and assault are completely unacceptable,” yet he has lied to the American people. I am pleased that there is some sense in the governing bodies of this country. Rep. Conyers has announced his intention to resign from his post. The Democratic Party has called for Al Franken to resign amidst the outflow of allegations of sexual misconduct. Al Franken announced his intention to resign because of these allegations. The Republican Party responded to allegations of child molestation by throwing its moral and financial support behind this alleged child molester.

One of these ways is the proper way to address sexual harassment, and I can tell you, it is not the way the Republicans have chosen. Call them out, cut them out, and move forward, this is the way. This is how reasonable people should respond. Instead, the Republican Party has called Roy Moore out, then decided they would rather send money to an accused child molester than see an attorney sit in the Senate.

I am ashamed today in our nation and our Republican leadership. I take hope that this wave of survivors of sexual assault coming forward is heralding the arrival of a new cultural awakening in which we learn our actions towards other human being have consequences. I hope to see a United States that lives up to its creed that all [people] are created equal and that no one deserves to survive sexual assault, only to see their assailant embraced by the government of the United States of America. I hope to witness this day.

  1. Don’t know what planet the contributir has been living on, but Mitch Connell did everything in his power to defeat Roy Moore, including funnelling mega $ millions into the campaigns of both Luther Strange and Doug Jones.
Judge Roy Moore has passed a certified lie detector test. The ‘accusers’ have not.
The policewoman who claimed they had orders to keep Moore out of the mall had to recant after both the former Mall Manager and the former Chief of Mall Security said no such orders ever existed! However The Judge had sent her son and brother to prison for dealing drugs! (Motive to lie, anyone?)
The ‘waitress’ never worked at that restaurant and Judge Moore never set foot in the place, according to the testimony of those who did work or patron there. But the Judge later presided over her divorce which was not in her favor. (Motive to lie, anyone?).
There are many holes in the 14-year-old’s story. as well. And she had made false harassment claims against three other men.
The one claiming he groped her, well, the judge had declared her an unfit mother and awarded custody of her son to her mother, the boy’s grandmother. (Motive to lie, anyone?). Actually, due to RINO Mitch McConnell’s treachery Alabama lost the senate seat of an honorable, decent and patriotic man. It is our loss and the nation’s loss.
