Restaurant review of George's Corner

Written by Lily Ofcarcik

One of St. George’s favorite places to go for a good meal and friendly atmosphere is George’s Corner, on Main and St. George Boulevard (Ancestor Square). It is the first place many of us think about when company comes to town and we want to go out for a tasty and fun time.

When George’s opened its doors just a few short years ago, it really filled a need in our community. Not only does the restaurant offer a nourishing and tasty breakfast or a great place to meet for lunch downtown, but is also a fun and comfortable restaurant/pub to enjoy a night out with friends and listen to live music.

Over time George’s menu has expanded and improved and now offers not only a terrific choice of breakfast classics such as Eggs Benedict, omelets, and biscuits and gravy, but also breakfast Quesadillas, Chilaquiles, Gluten free Pancakes, and more. George’s serves breakfast seven days a week, starting at 7:00 a.m.

George's Corner DessertLunch and dinner is served every day and features a selection of great sandwiches and burgers, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, Rib Eye Steak, BBQed Ribs and Pasta entrees. In addition, George’s offers delicious salads (we tried the tavern Chopped Salad, with smoked chicken, pear slices and candied pecans served with their amazing red wine house-made dressing). Desserts are great here too. Do not miss the hot Rhubarb/strawberry pie, served with creamy vanilla ice cream, the Root Beer Float, or an old fashioned Milkshake.

Also, keep in mind that George’s has a different Special each day of the week, and they are truly outstanding. Specials are usually written on the chalkboard at the entry way, but if you don’t see it, ask a waitperson. They’re delicious and well-priced.

Utah’s liquor laws dictate that “thou shalt consume an alcoholic beverage only if thou art having a bite to eat with it” (on the theory that ingesting food with a glass of something will diminish any intoxicating feeling you are hoping to have).  George’s accommodates the law with its Small Bites and Apps menu. When you’re in the mood to stop by and enjoy a glass of beer, wine or mixed drink after a busy day, just order a Hummus plate, House Nachos (huge plate), Fish Taco, or one of several other tasty items on the ‘Bites’ menu.

Check out George’s website for full menu, and list of specialty brews, wines, cocktails and after-dinner drinks. Live music plays every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings, so enjoy!  See The Independent’s print and online Calendar of Events for George’s musical listings.
