Southern Utah Heritage Choir presents annual fall concert, “My Song in the Night"

The Southern Utah Heritage Choir presents its annual fall concert, “My Song in the Night,” at the Cox Auditorium Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is under the direction of principal conductor Dr. Ken Peterson, artistic director and pianist Dr. Nancy Allred, and organist Karen Cantera.

Violinist Dr. Jason Swigert will perform several solos including Faure’s “Apres un Reve,” Tchaikovsky’s Valse-Scherzo, Chopin’s Nocturne in C-sharp Minor, and John Williams’ “Theme from Schindler’s List.”

Swigert, a local physician, began his violin studies at age 6, debuting with the Utah Symphony at age 15. He received a bachelor’s degree in violin performance and pedagogy from Brigham Young University. During his time at BYU, he held the position of concertmaster of the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra. While in Oregon attending medical school, he was first violinist in the Portland Opera Orchestra and assistant concertmaster for the Oregon Ballet Theater. He has performed numerous times with the Heritage Choir and remains active performing chamber music recitals.

The fall concert is a musical send-off for the choir’s upcoming Central European Tour, its tenth major performance tour. Since 1997, the choir has performed in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, the Czech Republic, Armenia, England, Scotland, Washington D.C., the Midwestern States, China, and Ireland. The choir will perform in The St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Krakow, St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, and the Matthias Church in Budapest. The choir will also perform several selections during a tour of the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow.

Having just completed a rigorous year of performing and recording, the choir is excited to perform many audience favorites such as Mack Wilberg’s “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” and “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,”  Dan Forrest’s “Nearer My God, to Thee,” Mendelssohn’s “He Watching Over Israel,” Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus,” Craig Courtney’s “Sanctus,” Mark Hayes’ “In the Morning, Joy,” and Rob Gardner’s “Savior, Redeemer of My Soul.”

Following the Central European Tour in October, the choir’s annual Christmas concerts featuring tenor soloist George Dyer which will be held Dec. 15 and 16 in the Cox Auditorium.
