St. George to Springdale transit serviceDo you like the idea of a St. George to Springdale transit service? Or, does the idea create some concerns? The Five County Association of Governments in association with the Dixie Metropolitan Planning Organization is inviting the public to three public meetings to discuss their needs and ideas to help the study team determine the feasibility of a transit service from St George to Springdale and Zion National Park.

The potential transit service would extend along the Highway 9 corridor. Officials say this service could benefit local citizens, employers, employees, customers, visitors, and others trying to access services and attractions from St. George to Zion National Park through the cities of Washington, Hurricane, LaVerkin, Virgin, Rockville, and Springdale.

Take some time to express your ideas for transportation between Springdale and St. George. Each meeting will start with a short presentation, and then the public will be welcome to share their thoughts.

The meetings will be held:

Mon., Feb. 8, 2016
9:30– 11:30a.m.
Hurricane Community Center
63 South 100 West. Hurricane, UT

Mon., Feb. 8, 2016
5:30– 7:30p.m.
Canyon Community Center
126 Lion Blvd. Springdale, UT

Wed., Feb. 10, 2016
10a.m–12p.m St George City Council Chamber
175 East 200 North. St George, UT

The planning project team will also have an information display and be able to answer questions at the Dixie Regional Transportation Expo on Tuesday Feb. 9 in the Dixie Center Ballroom. The meetings are open to the public and all interested parties are encouraged to attend.

  1. It’s important that citizens speak out on this important issue. Washington County cannot continue along the road it’s traveling – private vehicles – into the future. Already the traffic and parking problems in the park, Springdale and even Rockville, at times, are out of control. The experience for visitors and citizens is diminished. Public transportation is affordable if leaders manage the money available better. For instance, they’re sitting on money earmarked for the St. Geo Airport. Would that money be better directed to public transportation? The public service used in places such as California’s Yosemite Park area has worked well for many years and they’ve figured out how to get funding every year. Public transportation will assist the low-income workers that support the service industry in the park and Springdale and those with disabilities, who are unable to enjoy the park at this point due to lack of transportation. Many visitors would enjoy riding and enjoying the scenic beauty rather than dodging traffic. St. George has benefitted greatly over these many years due to Zion Park and should step up and help solve the problem we now face. A public/private partnership for this transportation plan should be considered, too. Many people who responded to a survey about public transportation want access to Walmart. If Walmart stands to make more money with more customers, get them involved. There are many opportunities that need to be explored and many benefits to be realized with this public transportation plan.

  2. We need it badly.. many people would use it. It’s about time we get into the 21 century from a transportation perspective!

  3. Who’s going to pay or operate this service? Is the a service that stops at every bus stop or is it a St. George to Springdale shuttle service? Do we tell the local businesses along Route 9 to stick it?
Reminds me of the cross country Route 66. The interstate was more important than thousands of businesses. But from a transportation perspective, it made sense.
