State Auditor releases audit of Police Officer Standards and Training

On Jan. 30, the Office of the State Auditor released its Performance Audit of Police Officer Standards and Training, or POST. The audit includes five key findings:

—Discipline given out by POST Council for peace officer misconduct appears lenient when compared to other states.

—Peace officer dishonesty is not always reportable but still undermines credibility and effectiveness.

—Law enforcement agencies failed to report some cases of misconduct to POST as required by law.

—Information regarding past officer discipline is not readily accessible to law enforcement agencies.

—POST expanded training to accommodate peace officer hiring needs.

“Police officer misconduct tarnishes the reputation and credibility of all officers,” said Auditor John Dougall. “Ensuring appropriate discipline strengthens the public’s confidence in our peace officers.  I encourage the Legislature, POST Council and other interested parties to continue to work together to ensure the highest standards of behavior among Utah’s police officers.”
