With plenty of great weather happening in St. George, get outside and enjoy the night sky too at the seventh season kick-off event of Sunset on the Square this Friday, May 22, at 4 p.m. at Town Square Park. Featuring a Country Showdown, Girls on the Run 5K, and much more, this will be the Sunset on the Square outdoor movie series’ largest kick-off event yet.

Starting off the night of festivities will be the Stephen Wade Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Country Showdown presented by Cherry Creek Radio. Country Showdown is America’s largest Country music talent show, designed to find the most promising country music talent in the nation and give performers a chance to launch their professional music careers.

“This is a great opportunity to launch a career in country music for one of many talented, local singers here in our area,” said James English, general sales manager of Cherry Creek Radio. “Being part of the season kick-off for Sunset on the Square is a great way to partner with local businesses and showcase the contestants in of the city’s best parks.”

Another part of the Sunset on the Square kick-off event is the first annual Girls on the Run 5K Celebration Run beginning at 4 p.m. Girls on the Run of Southern Utah is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum. Executive Director Melissa Miller wants to the run to be a celebration to honor the girls’ hard work in meeting their year goals and making lasting memories and friendships. Bike in Downtown will also be featured at the event by the City of St. George. This is a new program being launched in conjunction with National Bike Month.  They will be providing free bike valet for any residents biking to the event and will give out downtown coupons for any bikers. Along with a variety of fun events happening during the kick-off, the culmination of Sunset on the Square kick-off event is, of course, the movie. The featured movie on Friday, May 22, will be “Big Hero 6.” Bring the family together for this fun film and an opportunity to spend time together and with the community.

“I tell people, if you haven’t been to Sunset on the Square yet, you need to go,” said Dawn McLain, SOTS owner and coordinator. “I see attendees throughout the year and they are always checking in to see when the next season will start so they don’t miss any of them!”
