Exhibited nationally and internationally, Janet A. Cook offers insight into her creative process during her upcoming Art Insights appearance at SUU’s Auditorium Theatre on Thursday, September 24, at 7 p.m. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to attend.
Originally from Great Britain, Cook now resides in New York City. In 2014, she received an honorable mention from the Portrait Society of America and was also selected by the Principle Gallery, Charleston, S.C., to participate in the international juried exhibition, “Women Painting Women,” and the artists painting artists show, “She Depicting Her,” at the Alex Adam Gallery, New York City. In 2013 she exhibited at the Fountain Art Show, in Manhattan’s Armory, and her work was shown in France, Germany, and Romania as part of The Dacia Universal Art Project. Cook is slated to have her next solo show in 2016 at the Dacia Gallery. Over the years, she has received many awards for excellence, including gold and silver medals from the Allied Artists of America, Best in Show from the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and an honorable mention in the Portrait Society of America members show.
“The common thread throughout my work is my fascination with the figure; it’s timeless, beautiful and powerful,” says Cook. “Additional inspiration comes from variety of sources ranging from the old masters to modern day advertising, graffiti and body art. My goal is to combine these elements, along with my own imagination into a cohesive, strong statement that intrigues and engages the viewer.”
Art Insights is a weekly program hosted during the fall and spring semesters by SUU’s Art and Design faculty. Students and community members meet to experience presentations and discussions by visiting artists and art educators from around the nation who share their work and insights and attend gallery openings.
