In October and November, SUU’s theatre and dance dept. presents “Hamlet” with a twist and the musical “Next To Normal.”

A Shakespearean classic marks the end of the Adams Memorial Theatre as a performance space. The title role will be played by Halie Merrill, with opposite-gender casting in other prominent roles in an innovative production of “Hamlet” directed by Peter Sham. In addition to Halie Merrill, “Hamlet” features Trevor Messenger as Ophelia, Henry Ballesteros as Polonius, Selena Price as Laertes, Kade Cox as Gertrude, Amber James as Horatio, and Madison Ford as Claudius. The cast also features Tammi Colombo, Kaitlyn Curry, Brandon Grayson, Alex Grieg, Lauren Hoover, Joshua Hopkins, Michaela Kelly, Courtney McMullin, Abby Nakken, Madeline Peck, Justin Stockett, Robby Wilson, and Cooper Wilt.

“Hamlet” opens on Friday, Oct. 2, and runs Oct. 5 and Oct. 8-10 with performances beginning at 7:30 p.m.

October will also see the southern Utah premiere of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Next to Normal.” Directed by Joshua Durfey, this provocative work centers on a woman’s dependency on antidepressants, which puts her family in crisis. The cast of “Next to Normal” is comprised of Carly Christensen as the mother Diana, Luke S. Johnston as her husband Dan, Keaton Johns as son Gabe, Brittany Reeds as daughter Natalie, Colton Needles as Henry, and Alec TerBerg as two distinctively different doctors treating Diana. The searing dramatic musical runs Oct. 28-31 and Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Oct. 31. All performances are in SUU’s Auditorium Theatre. The play involves adult content and language.

Ticket prices for “Hamlet” are $10 and $5 for youth, and “Next to Normal” tickets are $15 and $7 for youth. Both productions are free for and SUU faculty, staff, and students with a valid ID. Faculty and staff are entitled to bring one guest. The CPVA Flex Pass offers six admissions to any theatre, dance or music event and can be used for a single entrance to a production or can be used to admit six people to one event. The pass can be used in any multiples for CPVA ticketed events. The cost of the Flex Pass is $40 per pass (a $65 value). For tickets or the Flex Pass, call the SUU Ticket Office at (435) 586-7872 or purchase in person at the Centrum Arena box office. Single tickets may be purchased online. All seats are general admission. There is no reserve seating.
