SUU presents Piano Monster Concert
By Ashley H Pollock
The Southern Utah University music department and over 100 piano students from the area are gearing up for the annual Piano Monster Concert Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater in Cedar City.
“What is nine pianos, over 100 players, and a drum set all on the same stage called?” asked Mary Anne Andersen, adjunct professor of music at SUU. “A piano orchestra, of course!”
Much time and preparation goes into a concert of this magnitude. Participants from the community have been rehearsing since October while the SUU Piano Ensemble has been working on picking, arranging, rehearsing, and teaching the music for the Piano Monster Concert since August.
“The most rewarding part of this concert is working with the kids in the community,” said Angie Woods, a senior music education major. “It’s awesome to see how excited they are to perform at such young ages.”
“Several members of the ensemble will be conducting pieces, and all will be playing in the various groups alongside piano students and teachers from the community,” said Christian Bohnenstengel, director of the concert. “The monster concert provides our students with such unique and valuable experiential learning experiences, and it brings the music community of Cedar City and St. George together.”
Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for alumni with a card, $3 for youth. SUU faculty, staff, and students are free with a current ID.
