By Shannon Moss
Applications are now being accepted for the 2019 Youthlinc Utah Young Humanitarian Award. Do you know a high school or college student making a difference in their local community? Invite them to apply for $22,000 in college scholarships. The application deadline is March 1. To apply, visit youthlinc.org and click on “Young Humanitarian Award.”
One outstanding high school student and one outstanding college student will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship. One high school student and one college student will each receive a $3,000 college scholarship. Three high school students and three college students will each receive a $1,000 college scholarship. That’s $22,000 given to ten Utah students who are making the world they live in a better place. In addition, any student attending the University of Utah will receive a matching scholarship from the Union Student Leader Scholarship Fund managed by the A. Ray Olpin Union Building. A $5,000 scholarship from Youthlinc would turn into $10,000 for University of Utah students!
Most of the applicants for the Youthlinc Utah Young Humanitarian Award don’t think they have done enough to win an award for their service. They often need a teacher, mentor or a service supervisor to encourage them to apply.
Over the last thirteen years, there have been over 1,200 student applicants for the award. Each young person has had a unique area of focus in helping others. Past winners of the award have volunteered mentoring youth, working with refugees, fighting for social equality, or simply spreading small acts of kindness.
To recognize and celebrate students who are making a difference in their own communities, Youthlinc began offering college scholarships to outstanding young humanitarians in 2005. This award is Utah’s largest service scholarship recognizing service-minded Utah high school juniors and seniors and undergraduate students with scholarship awards for their service.
The award is open to high school juniors and seniors and undergraduate students in the state of Utah. Applicants must be Utah students and U.S. citizen or legal resident or have DACA status. Graduate students are not eligible for this award.
