Through his usual means of communication (Twitter), President Trump announced today that he feels transgender individuals are/would be a burden on the United States military. He tweeted, in part, that the US military, “cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
This reverses the inclusive direction President Obama had pointed the armed forces in when he announced that transgender individuals would be allowed to serve openly in the military.
The tweet comes amid discussion and debate over whether the Pentagon would cover the medical costs of hormone therapy and transition surgery for transgender soldiers.
According to a study by the RAND Corporation, it is estimated that 2,450 transgender individuals are currently serving in the US military.
