Improv Comedy Is for Everyone

With no shortage of entertainment in southern Utah, theater productions, art galleries, dance recitals, and live music are just a part of the robust artistic community that can be sampled on any given weekend. But have you tried Improv? At a So U Comedy Theater Improv Show, the audience is the most important player joining the cast each night. Scenes are made up on the spot, based on suggestions the host gets from (YOU) the audience. So, are you ready to play?
Founded in 2016, The So U Comedy Theater has been supplying laughs for nearly a decade. Evolving through phases of funny – their debut at Even Stevens was the first time many novice improvisers were in front of an audience. “We started our regular shows at Even Stevens, then the DiFiore Center, a hotel conference room, and most recently the Dixie Convention Center.” Ginger Nelson, a cast member and founder, recalled, ‘If there was an empty room in St. George, we have probably performed there.” Nelson remembers the growth of the cast and the support from fans who have become family. “All through that, we’ve had regulars come to our shows. It’s great to see familiar faces over the years.”
As a Non-Profit Organization, education is a founding principle of So U and part of its mission. Cast members host weekly community practices open to all ages and experience levels. Anne Schwab, also a current cast member and founder, believes improv is for everyone. “I take it as a compliment when people say “I could never do that! I can’t think of stuff on the spot!” The reality is everyone improvises every day! We don’t have a script for life; we all make it up as we go along. Some of the funniest moments in life are spontaneous.”
With the core belief that improv is for everyone, So U has embraced its place within the arts community and found a sense of belonging due in part to performing at The Electric Theater. On the recent move, Nelson commented, “The Electric Theater is perfect for us. We get to perform in the heart of the Arts District. We want to be an institution for the community, and we provide something one of a kind. Improv is just a small slice of pie that is part of a delicious theatrical experience, and everyone loves pie!”
Whether it’s your first or fiftieth show, the invitation stands to join the laughs for shows on September 7th and 21st. The So U Comedy Theater hosts four shows a month. Every other Saturday, you can see the cast back to back for a family-friendly show at 7 pm, followed by the highly attended Uncensored show at 9 PM.
