Whether you’re brand new to target shooting or ready to test your skills in friendly competition, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is offering three free events this June designed to foster community, confidence, and outdoor recreation—starting with a women’s open house in Salt Lake City and two days of rifle competitions in Vernal.

Women’s Hunting & Fishing Open House

Date: Saturday, May 31, 2025
Time: 1 PM – 4 PM
Location: Lee Kay Public Shooting Range, 6000 W. 2100 S., Salt Lake City, UT

This open house welcomes women of all ages and skill levels to learn about hunting, fishing, and shooting sports in a supportive environment. Activities include dog handling demos, wild game cooking, casting instruction, and hands-on access to archery, shotgun, and .22 rifle ranges. Equipment will be provided; minimum age requirements apply.

3rd Annual .22 Wild Bunch Shoot (Men’s Competition)

Date: Friday, June 6, 2025
Time: 3 PM – 6 PM
Location: Buckskin Hills Shooting Complex, Vernal, UT
Awards Ceremony: 6:45 PM, Uintah Conference Center

Divided into age groups—“youngin” (11–17), “codger” (18–49), and “old fogy” (50+)—this event celebrates camaraderie, competition, and tradition. Shooters will complete three 10-shot stages (prone, sitting, standing) at 30-yard targets. Participants must bring their own .22 rifle and ammunition (no target rifles, handguns, or bipods).

36th Annual .22 Josie Shoot (Women’s Competition)

Date: Saturday, June 7, 2025
Time: 8 AM – 12 PM
Location: Buckskin Hills Shooting Complex, Vernal, UT
Awards Ceremony: 1 PM, Uintah Conference Center

Created in 1988 by Hunter Ed instructor Carole Jackson and named after Utah pioneer Josie Bassett Morris, the Josie Shoot has become a cherished tradition that empowers women through marksmanship. Age classes include juniors (11–17), seniors (18–49), and “vintage” (50+), with prizes awarded for top scorers.

“This event gives women a welcoming space to grow their skills, connect, and carry on a legacy,” says DWR’s Tonya Kieffer-Selby.
