Summer is the perfect time to dive into a great book—and the Washington County Library System is making it even more rewarding with its annual Summer Reading Program, running June 2 through July 26. With around 6,000 participants each year, this beloved program is open to children, teens, and adults, offering something for everyone in the family.
This year’s theme, “Color Our World,” invites readers of all ages to explore stories that inspire creativity, curiosity, and connection. Whether you’re paging through a vibrant picture book or diving into a gripping novel, you’ll be part of a colorful summer adventure!
The Summer Reading Program isn’t just fun—it’s powerful. Research shows that kids who read during the summer maintain or even improve their reading levels, helping them return to school confident and prepared. For teens and adults, reading is a proven way to reduce stress, improve focus, and keep your brain healthy and active.

Here’s how it works: Read every day, log your progress, and earn prizes along the way. Participants who complete all eight weeks of reading will be entered into drawings for exciting prizes:
- Kids can win gift cards to fun local spots like House of Jump and Confetti Kids
- Teens can score Amazon gift cards
- Adults have a chance to win Kindles and iPads

Best of all? The program is completely free for library patrons, and all activities are free to attend!
Online registration begins May 1, with in-person sign-ups starting May 27. Visit your local branch for special events and reading activities throughout the summer.
