July 5, 2025 — Garfield County, UT
Containment of the France Canyon Fire continues to improve as crews bring the perimeter under control. Now at 80% containment and totaling 33,364 acres, the fire has been officially transitioned from Great Basin Incident Management Team 5 to a local Type 3 Incident Management Team. The handoff ensures continuity in fire suppression and repair efforts as most crews will remain in place.
Yesterday, firefighters successfully completed containment on the northwestern perimeter between Johnson Canyon and Proctor Canyon. Crews continue to focus on the western flank, where active patrol and mop-up operations are ongoing. With key coordination from the outgoing team, seeding was completed on repaired dozer lines and suppression repair crews are now conducting mastication and equipment transport to the Blue Fly Creek area.

Repair Work and Continued Safety Closures
While progress is encouraging, fire officials urge the public to respect current forest closures for safety. Suppression repair is still underway on several flanks of the fire, and heavy equipment remains active throughout the area. The current closure order, in effect through July 31 (unless rescinded earlier), applies to most National Forest System lands south of Utah State Route 12 in the Powell Ranger District. Specific trails and roads in Red Canyon remain open, but the East Fork Road (087) remains closed.
Weather Outlook: Drier, Warmer Days Ahead
Yesterday’s weather brought light morning rain and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon, leading to concerns of flash flooding in canyon areas. Temperatures remained cool, in the upper 60s to low 70s, with relative humidity ranging between 25–39%. Winds shifted west to southwest at 5–10 mph.
Starting today, a warming trend is expected through the weekend. Daytime highs will rise into the upper 70s and low 80s, while relative humidity drops back into the single digits. The chance of wetting rain decreases significantly, heightening fire weather risks again. For air quality updates, visit fire.airnow.gov.
Fire Restrictions Remain in Effect
Stage 1 Fire Restrictions continue for all state lands and unincorporated private lands, including Trust Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife Management Areas. These restrictions also apply to Bryce Canyon National Park, Dixie National Forest, and the Color Country and Paria River BLM Districts. For full fire restriction details, visit Utah Fire Info.
