The Cedar City Arts Council is excited to be offering their third Arts*Lab workshop for children, ages 11 to 15, on Saturday, May 2, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Cedar City Aquatic Center. The Arts*Lab explores the creative process through art, dance, music, and theater, with professional arts educators as facilitators. While this is a free event, pre-registration is required, and classes fill fast.
Cedar City Arts Council Education Director Denise Purvis said she feels fortunate to be able to provide kids with the opportunity to work with such talented artists and teachers.
“This is our third workshop for youth this age,” Purvis said. “Most recently we hosted a figure drawing series that offered students an amazing opportunity to hone their drawing skills with a gifted artist … We really look forward to working with this population. Our focus is on the creative process, rather than a product, which is very important for budding artists.”
Purvis, an assistant professor of dance at Southern Utah University, will actually be one of the facilitators at this Saturday’s Arts*Lab. Other facilitators include Kaer Neumann, Nathan McDonald, and Melanie Skankey. Neumann is a musician with the Orchestra of Southern Utah and school orchestra teacher, McDonald is a visual arts teacher at East Elementary, and Skankey is a theater teacher and BTS specialist at North Elementary.
Participants will experience a variety of approaches to art-making – all focused on giving voice to each individual’s personality. At the end of the workshop, parents and participants are invited to remain for about 10 minutes to enjoy an informal sharing of the students’ art.
