Community members with a love for the arts and some free time are being invited to join the St. George Museum of Art through its rewarding volunteer docent program. These volunteer guides play an invaluable role in enhancing the experiences of visitors by leading tours, interpreting diverse exhibits, and sharing stories that make the collections truly come alive.
According to Museum Manager and Curator Meagan Evans, docents are an essential part of the museum’s educational initiatives. The institution warmly welcomes anyone with a passion for art, history, teaching, and local engagement to consider joining its enthusiastic team of volunteers. Docents undergo complete training to learn about the history and collections of the facility, focusing on interactive, curiosity-sparking techniques like asking thoughtful questions, making meaningful connections, and storytelling.
Once trained, volunteers have unique opportunities to help out at a variety of museum events and lead fifth-grade students from the Washington County School District on educational tours during the fall and winter months. These popular school tours give local students a wonderful chance to visit the museum, explore its impressive collections, and discover their own creativity.
Housed in a historic former sugar beet seed storage facility that was beautifully transformed into an elegant showcase for art in 1997, the museum is part of a vibrant arts complex that also features the Opera House and the Social Hall. Holding over 1,200 pieces in its permanent collection, the museum is located at 47 East 200 North in the historic district of St. George. The facility is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, with extended hours on Fridays until 8 PM.
