Red Acre Farm featured on Fox’s ‘Teen Chef Masters’

Red Acre Farm’s herbs are slated to appear on “Teen Chef Masters” Saturday, Oct. 17, at 9 a.m. on KSTU Fox 13.

Teen Chef Masters is a television program that selects 12 teenage chefs in Utah who compete for the title of TCM Champion as well as a four-year scholarship to Johnson and Wales University. The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food sponsored the show’s “Utah’s Own Pantry.” Teen Chef Masters is based on the Utah ProStart regional and state competition. ProStart is the Utah Restaurant Association’s school-to-career curriculum that provides high school juniors and seniors with skills they will need to enter the restaurant industry at a competitive and experienced level.

Owned and operated by mother-daughter duo Symbria and Sara Patterson, Red Acre Farms, offering a wide variety or organically-farmed products including over 177 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

“We grow as many herbs as we can start from seed and see a decent yield from,” said Symbria Patterson. “We have everything from common parsley to dittany of Crete. We grow perennials and annuals, culinary and medicinal herbs. Several different varieties of each herb, several kinds of mint and as many as 7 varieties of basil including holy basil. Some herbs are grown just because bees love them. We have both fresh and dried at our farm stand, ‘The Back Porch.’ We often sell them at the farmers markets. CSA members and share holders often receive herbs in their weekly share baskets. Current share holders are even welcome to request or pick herbs themselves at the farm.”

The Pattersons grow crops with only untreated well and use drip irrigation practices that use a fraction of the water used in conventional farming practices. The farm is located in Cedar City and maintains a consistent presence at farmers markets throughout southern Utah in addition to offering annual CSA memberships and supplying to local supermarkets.
