On Thursday,  Aug. 25., the Orchestra of Southern Utah will host an instrument “petting zoo” at 6 p.m. for community members to try out various instruments followed by an open rehearsal from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Both events will he held at the park next to the public library in Cedar City and are free and open to the public. Picnicking is acceptable.

Cedar Music Store & Studio will facilitate the instrument “petting zoo.” Both children and adults can try out violins, trumpets, flutes, and drums.

After that, the orchestra will rehearse “Hoe Down” from Aaron Copland’s “Rodeo,” and Italian composer Ennio Morricone’s “Gabriel’s Oboe” from the 1983 film, “The Mission,” and Duke Ellington’s “Caravan.”

Though the orchestra will stop and start to fix passages, the rehearsal will be interactive so the audience can understand how the orchestra works to coordinate different lines of music for a cohesive performance. It’s also an informal opportunity to see the instruments up close and personal.

In the event of inclement weather, the rehearsal will be moved and closed to the public. For more information, please visit myosu.org or call the Orchestra of Southern Utah at (435) 233-8213.
