The John Houston Gospel Choir performs at the St. George Tabernacle

John Houston and his gospel choir are excited to enter their fourth season with new material and new faces. They will be performing at the St. George Tabernacle on Friday, June 26, at 7 p.m. With a program that features old favorites, like “What A Friend We Have In Jesus,” a cappella number “Over My Head,” Houston’s “Feast Upon,” and Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up,” as well as more contemporary numbers such as “Fix Me,” from the movie “Joyful Noise,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” made popular by the rock group U2, and the upbeat favorite from “Sister Act,” “Oh Happy Day,” sung by Alice Ericksen, there is sure to be something for everyone who attends.
Besides former Tabernacle performances, the John Houston Gospel Choir has performed at the O.C. Tanner Amphitheater, Ancestor Square Concerts in the Park, the Artiste Sanctuary in Cedar City, the Cedar Canyon Campfire Series, the Festival of Trees, the Dickens Festival, the Hurricane Peach Festival, Santa Clara Swiss Days, the Live United Music Festival, and numerous local fundraisers.
Formerly a member of Gladys Knight’s Saints Unified Voices Choir, Houston has the vast musical talent and performing experience to make this group his signature endeavor. With members across southern Utah and some from out of state, John Houston’s Gospel Choir fills a niche in local music unoccupied by any other local performing group.
Additionally, this group draws from many parts of the country and from other countries as well, including England, Denmark, and Haiti. Members include former Tabernacle Choir, Heritage Choir, and Lieto Choir members, individual singer-songwriters, musical theatre performers, and various levels of professional performance. They are truly a cross-section of our community and country, and they are thrilled to bring the energy and love of up-tempo, old-school gospel-style singing to southern Utah.
All are invited to this free of charge performance. Dress is casual, and special needs facilities are available at the west Tabernacle entrance.
