H.R. 4532Tribal leaders hold press conference in opposition to Bears Ears National Monument repeal bill

Tribal leaders and community groups will speak out in opposition to Rep. John Curtis’ H.R. 4532 “Shash Jaa National Monument and Indian Creek National Monument Act” and its impact on Bears Ears National Monument Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. at the Utah State Capitol Rotunda.

On Jan. 9, the House Natural Resources Committee will hold a legislative hearing on H.R. 4532. The bill would not only codify President Trump’s illegal evisceration of Bears Ears National Monument but also delegate management of the monument to local officials while ignoring tribal sovereignty. Management plans in the bill also exclude three of the five tribes that engaged in government-to-government negotiations to protect Bears Ears as a national monument.

Speakers will include Virgil Johnson, chairman of the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation; Scott Groene, executive director of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, Ashley Soltysiak, director of the Sierra Club Utah, and Jonah Yellowman, spiritual advisor to Utah Diné Bikéyah.

The Utah State Capitol is located at 350 N. State St. in Salt Lake City. The event can be viewed on Facebook live. More information is available at utahdinebikeyah.org.
