New Salvation Army St. George Outpost hosts open house
The Salvation Army will celebrate the opening of the new Salvation Army St. George Outpost May 16 from 3 to 7 p.m. with an open house event at 803 S. Bluff St. in St. George as part of National Salvation Army Week. The event will feature food, a jump house, a Transportation Security Administration emergency disaster canteen, live music, and more.
The St. George service extension has served the Washington County for years but recently became an outpost and will continue to meet the needs of the most economically vulnerable populations in southern Utah. Services provided include travel assistance, monthly food boxes, a clothing closet, hygiene products, rent and utility assistance, gas vouchers, occasional emergency lodging, and liaison to rehabilitation in Las Vegas. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings are held Wednesday nights.
The Salvation Army in Utah provides services to more than 100,000 people in need annually. Range of social services include food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing, and assistance with energy bills.
National Salvation Army Week is observed immediately following Mother’s Day in May and was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954.
