SUU High School Honor Band concert showcases Colorado, Nevada, Utah students

Southern Utah University’s music department will host 145 high school students from the region to perform in the SUU High School Honor Band concert Jan. 12 at 4 p.m. in the Heritage Center Theater in Cedar City. The concert will also feature the SUU Wind Symphony. This event is free and open to the public.
“The SUU High School Honor Band had 270 applicants from 24 schools in Colorado, Nevada, and Utah,” said Dr. Adam Lambert, director of bands at SUU. “There were many strong auditions. We selected 145 students for the band. It’s exciting to host so many strong musicians. They will perform fun and challenging music, which should highlight the strengths of these students. The program includes, ‘The First Suite’ by Gustav Holst; ‘Aspen Jubilee,’ a tough but exciting piece by Ron Nelson; and the ‘Gum Suckers March,’ a classic by Percy Grainger.”
Students were selected through an audition to rehearse and perform under the direction of Lambert at SUU. Students selected for the SUU High School Honor Band participate in two days of rehearsals and activities, culminating in this concert at the end of the second day.
“The most rewarding part of preparing for this concert has been the ability to work with some really talented musicians,” said Aria Williams, a sophomore tuba performance major at SUU. “It’s been amazing to see how we’ve progressed as an ensemble. We work hard to prepare our music for the students and community of Cedar City.”
