Rosin cello duo performs at Kayenta
By Christopher Whiteside
The Rosin cello duo will perform at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta for one exciting night Feb. 23, performing music ranging from Telemann to Michael Jackson and from Klengell to Coldplay.
Utah cellists Jessika Soli and Daniel Gaisford will delight Kayenta audiences with a broad range of beautiful cello music spanning from the past to present. The duo enjoy sharing the experimental and educational aspects of their music in their live performances, giving audiences the best of great classic and new works, some of which they have composed. Rosin has appeared in concert series all over the country, generating excitement wherever they play. Inspired by 2CELLOS, Rosin performs original pop and rock music as well as classical and romantic music written by master cellists of the 18th and 19th centuries.
“The great cellists of the past were composers for the instrument and created beautiful works that inspired and developed cello techniques,” Gaisford said. “Following that great tradition, we also write for the cello ourselves and make transcriptions of popular works that fit the cello’s vocal and rhythmic qualities.”
Jessika Soli performs regularly with pianist William Joseph and the Empyrean Quartet of southern Utah. A graduate of the University of Utah, she studied with John Eckstein. Soli also attended UNLV, studying with Andrew Smith. At UNLV she won the concerto competition where she performed Dvorak’s Cello Concerto with the university orchestra. She served as principal cellist of the Southwest Symphony and she teaches a class of cellists at her studio in Santa Clara.
Daniel Gaisford has enjoyed a career as a soloist, chamber musician, and cello pedagogue. He attended the University of Southern California where he studied with Gabor Rejto and Ronald Leonard. He continued his studies at the Juilliard School of Music, studying with Harvey Shapiro, Channing Robbins, Felix Galamir, and Lillian Fuchs. He won first prize in the Juilliard School’s Shostakovich Cello Competition, which earned him the opportunity to debut at Lincoln Center where he performed the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 2 with the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra. Following his debut, Gaisford has been invited to be a guest soloist with the country’s leading orchestras and conductors.
Tickets are $30 and available through kayentaarts.com or by calling (435) 674-2787.
