Presents Patriotic Concerts
“Unsung Heroes”
June 10 & 11 @ St. George Tabernacle
The Southern Utah Heritage Choir (SUHC) will perform two patriotic concerts in honor of Flag Day at the St. George Tabernacle on Friday, June 10, at 7 PM, and Saturday, June 11, at Noon. Admission is free to the public with open seating.
“Unsung Heroes pays tribute to the greatness of our homeland, the United States, as we salute all branches of the U.S. military, military veterans, and those who gave their lives in service to this country,” said Geri Rhodes, president of the Southern Utah Heritage Choir. Both concerts have the same song list that includes an English version of The Ukrainian National Anthem to offer homage to the many lives recently lost in the war on Ukraine.
Rhodes added, “The Heritage Choir is especially moved to be performing a song with words written by the late Utah Senator Orrin G. Hatch called ‘Morning Breaks on Arlington.’” Hatch wrote the lyrics, while Janice Kapp Perry wrote the music, arranged by Richard W. Smith. Hatch had a passion for music and played piano, organ, and violin. On April 23, 2022, he passed away at the age of 88 as the longest serving Republican senator in U.S. history.
Other songs featured in the concerts include “America the Beautiful,” “Salute to the Armed Forces,” “A Song for the Unsung Heroes,” and “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”
The concert’s guest artists are all talented vocalists from Washington County. They are singer/songwriter Lyndsi Houskeeper and her son Luke Houskeeper, a student and member of the Chamber Singers group at Crimson Cliffs High School. The third vocalist, Brock Jongeward, is a business student at Dixie State University and has a Concert Choir background from his high school in Spokane, WA. The Disney organization once selected him to sing a solo on their Circle of Life recordings. The narrator for the concerts will be choir member John Mizukawa.
According to Rhodes, “These patriotic performances wrap up our concert season for 2021-22. We’ll return on September 23 with the start of our 2022-23 concert season.”
Each year, the Heritage Choir presents Fall, Christmas, Spring, Easter, and Flag Day concerts throughout southern Utah, as well as its free Fireside concerts at the Tabernacle. The Choir is under the direction of Principal Conductor Dr. Ken Peterson, and Associate Conductor Kathy Brown, The Choir’s Artistic Director and accompanist is Tami Creamer, with Karen Kennedy at the organ.
