Handel’s Messiah is the most popular masterwork in the choral/orchestral repertoire and, consequently, has received innumerable performances by ensembles who have loved it to death. Before 1960, most renditions were in symphonic style, with hundreds (sometimes thousands) in the chorus
There are many Messiah performances that showcase the highlights of Handel’s famous oratorio, but this will be a very rare occasion to watch it in its entirety, as it was originally written. It will be performed in Baroque style on Baroque instruments. The goal of the SGCS is to make the experience as close as possible to watching Messiah in Handel’s day.
Conducted by Dr. Paul Wiens, the SGCS consists of thirty choral artists committed to excellence in performing vocal chamber music. For this performance, they will be accompanied by an elite chamber orchestra assembled from the best musicians in Southern Utah.
The St. George Chamber Singers are comprised of choral artists committed to excellence in the performance of vocal chamber music. Singing with increasing levels of tonal richness, expressive intensity and compelling collective artistry, the SGCS is setting new standards of choral virtuosity and musicianship in the Desert Southwest.
