I stand humbled and excited as I step into the role of editor at The Independent | Southern Utah’s #1 Source for Arts, Events & Entertainment, your go-to guide for live music, theater, festivals and cultural happenings across St. George, Zion, Cedar City, Kanab and Mesquite since 1996.

Born in New York City, I discovered my passion for visual storytelling early on. That passion led me to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where I earned my fine-arts degree. A serendipitous road trip from the Windy City brought me to Southern Utah’s red rocks and vast skies—and this landscape captured my heart.

Over the years I’ve worn many creative hats. As a graphic designer, I’ve helped national brands find their voice; as an entrepreneur, I founded ART Provides gallery and event space in a historic theater and co-created the St. George Plein Air Festival—now entering its fifth year; and as co-founder of Art Broker Utah, I curate high-end art acquisitions for luxury residential and commercial clients. Through each venture, I’ve witnessed how art forges connections between individuals, small groups and entire communities.

In my new role, I’m committed to expanding The Independent’s coverage with fresh energy and broader perspective. You’ll find more in-depth artist profiles that trace the journey from studio to exhibition; behind-the-scenes features on our region’s festivals, live-music series and plein-air events; and practical guides to help you make the most of every cultural opportunity. We’ll continue to highlight local theater and dance, showcase emerging voices in poetry and prose, and dive into the business of the arts—from grant opportunities to gallery openings and high-end art-brokerage insights. We’ll also cover recreation—from Zion National Park guides and Southern Utah hiking trails to family-friendly gatherings and community interest features—offering practical tips for every reader.

Collaboration lies at the heart of this publication. I invite you—readers, artists, promoters and community leaders—to share your stories, your events and your feedback. Together with our talented writers, photographers and designers, we’ll ensure The Independent remains both a trusted resource and a creative spark that reflects the ambition and spirit of Southern Utah.

To longtime supporters and newcomers alike, thank you for welcoming me into this role. I’m Elizabeth Gunter, and with James McFadden’s legacy as Editor Emeritus in mind, I look forward to writing the next chapter of The Independent, together.
