The American Crossroads Theatre Company is set to captivate Cedar City audiences this fall with its production of Frederick Knott’s Dial “M” for Murder. Best known through Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film version, the play has long been regarded as a masterclass in suspense, tension, and shocking twists.

The Story

At the heart of the thriller is Tony Wendice, a retired tennis player whose wealthy wife, Margot, has fallen for another man. Wendice hatches a carefully constructed plan to have her killed. But murder plots rarely unfold as intended. With each phone call, key, and alibi, the web of deception grows tighter, and the hunter may soon become the hunted.

The Production

Artistic Director Richard Bugg takes the helm as director. “It is always a delightful challenge to work with a talented cast in discovering the delicate arc and tempo of a great stage mystery. With this group, I’m confident the challenge will be more than met,” said Bugg.

The cast features several well-known Southern Utah performers:

  • Tyson Chanticleer as Tony Wendice, the calculating husband.
  • Rachel Cox as Margot Wendice, the wife caught in a deadly trap.
  • Jared Davis as Max, Margot’s American love interest.
  • Brodie Perry as Captain Lesgate, stepping back on stage after a long absence.
  • John Blasko as Inspector Hubbard.
  • Stacey Johnson as Thompson.

Each performer brings both stage experience and community connection, promising a production that feels both professional and rooted in Cedar City’s vibrant arts scene.

Why It Endures

Praised as one of the most brilliant thrillers ever written for the stage, Dial “M” for Murder combines wit and elegance with escalating suspense. Its enduring appeal lies in the way it keeps audiences guessing until the very end—when nothing is quite as it seems.
