Armed Forces Day will be celebrated on Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16, at The Western Sky Aviation Warbird Museum located at the St. George Airport. This third annual celebration will kick off on Friday with a World War II-style “hangar dance.” Festivities will continue on Saturday with a Wings & Wheels event, also at the Western Sky Aviation Warbird Museum.
The hangar dance will run from 7-11 p.m. The Southern Utah Rebel Jazz Band will provide live music, and Red Rock Swing Dance will put on several performances, as well as teach a dance lesson at the beginning of the dance. Come dressed up in your 1940s vintage clothing, military uniform, or dressy casual. There will be a costume contest, and other door prizes will also be given away. All ages are welcome, and no dance experience or partner is required.
General admission tickets to the hangar dance are $20 per person or 2 for $35 and can be purchased either at the door or by calling (435) 229-4985. Your ticket also enters you in a drawing to win a ride in a vintage airplane. Additional tickets for the drawing may be purchased at the event. WWII veterans that would like to attend the dance may get in free of charge by calling (435) 229-4985.
On Saturday, the celebration will continue with the Wings & Wheels event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vintage aircraft and cars will be on display as well as other aviation memorabilia, exhibits, and vendors. Aircraft rides will be available for purchase in a WWII T-6 or a D18S Twin Beech which seats up to 10 people. Admission to Saturday’s events are free to the public.
Jack Hunter, the owner and president of the Western Sky Aviation Warbird Museum, said he hopes people will come out and enjoy this unique experience.
“This is going to be a phenomenal event,” he said.
The Western Sky Aviation Warbird Museum is open year round on Thursdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no fee for admission, but donations are gladly accepted.
