Downtown’s Town Square Park is filled with sounds of laughter as children splash in the water while losing themselves in play. It is the ideal placement for Val Lewis’ “Daddy’s Boy.” This heartwarming sculpture not only captures the innocence of childhood in a way that makes it plainly visible but induces nostalgic feelings of our own parenthoods or childhoods.

Art is not only what you see but what it allows you to feel. The purity of joy found in a child at play is one of the simplest pleasures in life. They are not caught up in the worries of the world; rather, they are wrapped up in the comfort of the moment. Looking at “Daddy’s Boy,” one is reminded of the moments that are truly important in life.

Born and raised in the quiet little northern Utah town of Bothwell on the same ground his great grandfather homesteaded, Lewis certainly had much inspiration to pull from to create this piece. Pablo Picasso stated, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Obviously, Lewis was able to maintain that inner child and shares it well with us in “Daddy’s Boy.”

Grab the kids, a picnic, and the camera as you head downtown to Town Square to splash in the water and make some memories worth capturing. While you are there, take a walk around and feel the magic of “Daddy’s Boy” by Val Lewis.
