“Spirit of Energy,” a half-size bronze female figure designed as a fountain and created by Karen Crain, is one of this month’s Art Around the Corner featured pieces. She sculpted the figure to represent three natural renewable energy sources: sun, wind, and water. The figure holds the sun high above her head, the wind blows her hair and garment behind her, and water pours from her extended hand. Standing on a globe, as all humanity does, represents humankind’s responsibility to use the earth’s natural resources ethically.
One might also find the woman to represent the source of life and the nurturing care of the earth, its resources, and humanity. This Art Around the Corner piece has been ideally placed just outside the beautiful flower garden on the corner of Tabernacle and Main, just across the street to the south of Annie’s Vintage Garden. Seeing the garden in full bloom throughout the season makes it easy to appreciate the gifts these resources can bestow. Not only does “Spirit of Energy” add beauty to the downtown Art Around the Corner exhibit, it adds intrigue, allowing for one to consider his or her own place and responsibility.
The Art Around the Corner Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the arts, enriching the community, and bringing fine arts to the heart of historic St. George. Two of the foundation’s projects include the Art On Main gallery strolls, and the Art Around the Corner Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit, a collection of sculptures from nationally-renowned artists. Many of the sculptures are for sale, with new exhibitions installed annually. Others have been purchased from the artists and remain part of an ongoing exhibit of St. George City’s permanent collection.
Formerly know as the Dixie Arts Foundation and the Pioneer Center for the Arts Foundation, the Art Around the Corner Foundation was originally formed in 1988.
