SUU’s Art Insights features illustrator Thinh Nguyen
By Amanda DeBry
Illustrator Thinh Nguyen will present on his work Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. in the SUU Auditorium as part of SUU’s Art Insights series.
“Thinh is a talented artist who works both as a freelance illustrator and a textile designer,” said Hala Swearingen, an associate professor of art at SUU. “I am excited for our students to learn about textile design and how one gets into that industry. His experience and information will be valuable for students specializing in graphic design and illustration.”
After graduating high school, Nguyen attended California State University Fullerton and received a BFA in illustration in 2013 with a minor in philosophy and further acquired a certificate in textile/surface pattern at Otis College of Art and Design in 2016. Since then, he’s worked on editorial and spot illustrations for magazines and as an arts instructor to kids and later transitioned to being an in-house textile designer ranging from fashion to quilting and crafting fabrics. His work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles and Creative Quarterly and has shown at various galleries. What he enjoys most is being to be able to work with his hands, using paper, paints, and paintbrushes — primarily watercolors and acrylics — and produce a striking image that is strong in visual narratives that elicits lasting emotions.
“I was so honored and thrilled to be asked to speak at SUU,” said Nguyen. “When I was an undergrad at California State University Fullerton, professor Hala Swearingen helped me so much apropos to art and illustration that I’ve never forgotten her unwavering guidance and encouragement. I hope that by sharing my experience and journey working in the visual arts, I’m able to impart a learning opportunity for the audience to forge their own path in life.”
In addition to his Art Insights presentation, Nguyen has an art piece currently on display at Southern Utah Museum of Art in conjunction with its Day of the Dead exhibition.
