Art Works Gallery will show a dual exhibit featuring the paintings of Spike Ress and the artist books and assemblage of Sue Cotter. The opening reception takes place on Sept. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Art Works Gallery in Cedar City. The exhibit shows through October 21, 2017.
A former commercial artist, Ress eventually felt the pull of fine art. Devoting weekends and vacations to pursuing his own artistic development, he eventually parted ways with commercial art to pursue painting full-time. He began with a focus on watercolor, and after gaining national acclaim added oils to his repertoire. Today he works in both. With a preference for landscape subjects, he loves the land and clear light of the American Southwest, but the challenge of new subjects in different parts of the world is always rejuvenating.
“No matter where I am, I try to respond with direct honesty to what is before me,” Ress said. “It is my aim to capture the way a scene feels, not just the way a scene looks.”
Cotter is a book artist who makes one-of-a-kind and limited edition artist books. In addition, she creates assemblage pieces. Sue resides in Parowan where she owns Woodhenge Press, her own letterpress studio. A native of Montana, she earned a bachelor’s degree in art from the University of Nevada, Reno. In 1988, she returned to the university to study letterpress printing with Robert Blesse at the Black Rock Press, starting her on the path as a book artist.
