Bestselling author Dave Farland to teach free seminar in St. George
New York Times bestselling author Dave Farland will teach a seminar, “Living in the New Age of Publishing,” on Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the St. George Library, 88 W. 100 South, at the monthly chapter meeting of the Heritage Writers Guild.
Mr. Farland is the author of dozens of books, including his latest novel “Nightingale,” a young adult fantasy thriller set in St. George. “Nightingale” was the grand prize winner in the Hollywood Book Festival, where it placed first in all genres and all categories, and the book also won the 2012 International Book Award for best young adult novel of the year.
Farland has trained many writers who have gone on to become bestselling authors. Among his credits are his novels in the “Star Wars” and “Mummy” universes as well as his work as a video game designer, most notably for “Starcraft’s Brood War.” He began writing fantasy under his pen name, David Farland, in the mid-1990s, when he gained international prominence for his bestselling Runelords series.
Farland’s historical novel “In the Company of Angels,” describing an account of the Willie Handcart Company of 1856, won the Whitney Award Winner for best novel of the year. In 1999, he set the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest single-person book signing.
Farland has also written science fiction under his own name, Dave Wolverton, including the highly praised “On My Way to Paradise,” which won the Philip K. Dick Memorial Special Award for best novel in the English language.
The seminar is free and open to the public. The Heritage Writers Guild is the Southern Utah nonprofit chapter of the League of Utah Writers. In addition to the monthly chapter meetings, the Guild hosts writer critique groups at the St. George Library each Wednesday at 1 p.m. and the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 6:30 p.m. Critique groups are free to attend and open to writers of all genres and skill levels.
