As part of their mission to promote the arts in Cedar City, the Cedar City Arts Council is very pleased to announce the spring 2015 recipients of its Artists’ Mini-Grants Awards.

Patricia Hill, chemist and jewelry maker, received the President’s Discretionary Award of $1,000 to fund a series of workshops in which she will teach the application of chemistry to various metals in the creation of jewelry.

Other grant recipients received between $200 and $500 for this cycle to help them with their art projects.

Arthur Blessing specializes in photographing old buildings in southern Utah. His award will be used to update his photography equipment.

Painter Brian Hoover has an upcoming exhibition in a gallery in Oregon. His award will fund a catalog that will essentially describe his life’s work and will be used during the exhibition. For more information on Brian Hoover, visithttp://www.brianhoover.com.

Francessa Merdes is the choir director at Fiddler’s Elementary School in Cedar City. Her award will help with the cost of music for the programs planned for the choir’s presentation.

Gina O’Neal is a fabric artist. The new works to be created and displayed with the funds O’Neal received are conversation starters for the subject of sexual abuse.

Leesa Ricci is affiliated with the Southern Utah Space Foundation. She will use the funds received to upgrade the photography equipment used as part of the foundation’s education series.

Katharine Villard is a local photographer and computer digital image maker. Her award will help purchase the materials needed for her unique artistic technique.

Mona Woolsey, an art specialist for the Iron County School District, will attend two workshops in two different media. She hopes to increase her skills in fused glass and oils. All of the artists, as recipients of these awards, are committed to sharing their skills and creations to enhance the cultural atmosphere of Cedar City. Many of them will present in the upcoming socials presented by the Cedar City Arts Council.

Cedar City Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the arts in Iron County. Their mission is to foster a thriving arts community in Iron County through advocacy, appreciation, education, and support. The Cedar City Arts Council is run completely by volunteers. All of the funds received through donations or memberships are used to help the arts thrive in this community. Cedar City Arts Council is supported by generous contributions from the Cedar City Brian Head Tourism Bureau, Cedar City, the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, and Art Works.
