Whether you’re a seasoned professional, a dedicated hobbyist, or new to town with a case full of strings or brass, the Orchestra of Southern Utah (OSU) is tuning up for its next season — and you might be just the missing note.

Auditions for the 2025–26 concert season will be held June 26 and June 28 at the Heritage Center in Cedar City. Music Director Carylee Zwang is especially eager to welcome new talent to OSU’s ranks, with particular needs for strings, bassoon, trombones, and French horn players. Select performances this year will also call for saxophone.

“If you’re ready to come back to OSU or have recently moved here, we would love to get you involved,” said Zwang. “The friendly audition is a way to better connect with our musicians.”

A Community of Musicians and Neighbors

The orchestra draws performers of all ages — from middle school students to retirees — and represents a wide range of professions including teachers, doctors, tech professionals, and Southern Utah University students.

Rehearsals take place Thursday evenings from 7 to 9:30 PM, starting in late August and continuing through the spring concert in April. All rehearsals and performances are held at the Heritage Center Theater, home to OSU’s dynamic mix of classical favorites, family matinees, and innovative new works.

A Season of American Soundscapes

This upcoming season aligns with America250 celebrations and will spotlight iconic works from American composers. Concertgoers can look forward to pieces like Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings”, Aaron Copland’s “Rodeo Suite”, and selections from Broadway, film, and rock genres.

Spring brings the highly anticipated Hal Campbell Young Composer Concert, showcasing original compositions from Utah’s emerging composers. Information about entering the competition can be found on the OSU website.

Family-friendly programming also returns in October, featuring a matinee concert and an interactive music, art, and science event tailored to young audiences — including the tiniest patrons in arms.
