Classical guitarist Swede Larson performs at SUU
By Ashley Pollock
Classical guitarist Swede Larson will perform in the Thorley Recital Hall at SUU in Cedar City Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Drawing from the “golden age of guitar” as well as contemporary pieces, Larson has selected and diligently prepared some of the most loved and delightful pieces of music ever composed for the guitar. This concert is free and open to the public.
Larson began playing the guitar with his father at a very early age and brings a unique perspective to the instrument. His passions rest in sedate musical experiences and the vigorous sport of exploring caves. In college, he had to choose between the two and made the choice to study guitar under Frank Koonce at Arizona State University. While there, he traveled during the summers, attending competitions and conventions, gaining the opportunity to study with guitarists such as Oscar Ghiglia, Michael Chapdelaine, Bruce Holzman, Martha Masters, Nicholas Goluses, Rachel Gauk, William Kannengeiser, and Lily Afshar.
Larson taught guitar at London Studios and took a break from performing in order to focus on teaching. His guidance focuses on bringing the highest musicianship and the solid technique of playing regardless of style or genre.
“Playing the guitar well is done the same way whether you are playing Joaquin Rodrigo or Led Zepplin, good technique is good technique, period!” Larson said.
