Community Invited To Participate In ‘Paint Night’ Sessions For New City Hall Mural
St. George residents are invited to contribute to the new City Hall mural during upcoming ‘Paint Night’ sessions.

St. George residents are encouraged to pick up paintbrushes and become a part of city history in the upcoming weeks for a series of “Paint Night” sessions presented by the City of St. George; 1,000 porcelain tiles will be painted for inclusion in a mural to be installed in the new City Hall building this fall. The finished mural, measuring 12 feet by 24 feet, will hang above the entrance to the new 300-seat Council Chambers.
When completed and assembled, thanks to the creativity of Mural Mosaic, the Canada-based firm overseeing the mural project, the 1,000 tiles bearing disparate paintings will magically transform into a single, unified image of hikers and a cyclist enjoying a beautiful jaunt through Snow Canyon State Park.
“We heard about Mural Mosaic when they did a mural for the City of South Jordan, and realized they’d be the ideal company to guide our project,” said Marc Mortensen, the City of St. George operations director. “They have more than 20 years of experience in creating murals for clients worldwide, and a process that will enable us to include as many members of our community as possible. We hope everyone — whether you’re an artist or not — will want to contribute to this important piece of St. George history.”
The dates for future paint nights, which will all take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Social Hall, are as follows: February 28, March 10, March 21 and March 22.
At each Paint Night, participants of all ages and artistic abilities will be given packets containing a 4.5-inch by 4.5-inch tile, two paintbrushes and eight paints in the color palette of their choice. They are welcome to capture any image desired of their favorite aspect of life in St. George: its rich history, scenic natural beauty, spirit of community, active outdoor lifestyle — or whatever else provides inspiration.
There are only two caveats for the process, notes Community Arts Manager Peyton Lee.
“If, for example, you have a blue palette, then 80 percent of your painting should feature shades of blue, and 20 percent can include the ‘accent colors,’” Lee said. “And, no words — which would be a distraction in the finished mural. Other than that, everyone is free to show us what they love about life in St. George!”
Admission to all Paint Nights is free, but pre-registration is strongly recommended. For more information, visit this page.
